Green Certification
About Green Certification
Green Certification establishes the life cycle of products – from raw material extraction and the manufacturing process to product performance during use and end-of-life recycling. It supports manufacturers to position their products as green and eco-friendly, enhances customer confidence, and promotes the reputation of your organization.
IAS provides a simple yet efficient Green Certification process to help your organization achieve Green Certification in a timely manner.
What standards underpin Green Certification?
Credible green product certification is grounded in internationally recognized environmental-labelling standards rather than marketing language alone:
- ISO 14024 (Type I ecolabels). A voluntary, third-party-verified ecolabel awarded against pre-set environmental criteria for a product category – the most rigorous and trusted form of green product claim.
- Life-cycle thinking. Assessment considers impacts across the product’s life – raw materials, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life – so the claim reflects the whole product, not a single attribute.
- Independent verification. Third-party assessment by a certification body gives customers, retailers, and regulators confidence that the green claim is substantiated.
Green claims in Canada: the Competition Act
In Canada, environmental marketing claims are regulated under the Competition Act. Amendments introduced by Bill C-59 (in force since June 20, 2024) added explicit anti-greenwashing provisions, and businesses should be aware that:
- Environmental claims about a product must be supported by adequate and proper testing, and broader environmental claims must be substantiated in accordance with internationally recognized methodology.
- The burden of proof sits with the business making the claim – a significant change from previous law.
- Since June 2025, private parties can seek to bring greenwashing actions before the Competition Tribunal, increasing the risk of unsupported claims.
Independent green certification – assessed against internationally recognized standards such as ISO 14024 – is a practical way for Canadian organizations to substantiate their environmental claims and reduce the risk of greenwashing allegations.

Frequently Asked Questions about Green Certification
What is green product certification?
It is independent, third-party verification that a product meets defined environmental criteria across its life cycle, allowing it to be credibly marketed as green or eco-friendly.
Which standards is it based on?
Internationally, the ISO 14020 series - particularly ISO 14024 for Type I ecolabels - provides the framework for third-party-verified environmental product claims.
Why does certification matter for Canadian companies?
Canada's Competition Act (as amended by Bill C-59) requires environmental claims to be properly substantiated. Independent certification helps demonstrate that substantiation and reduces greenwashing risk.
Which products can be certified?
A wide range of products that contain measurable environmental attributes across their life cycle, from manufacturing inputs to end-of-life.
How long does certification take?
It depends on the product and the assessment required; IAS provides a plan and timeline once your application is reviewed.
How long is the certificate valid?
Certification runs on a defined cycle with periodic review to confirm the product continues to meet the criteria.
Does green certification help with green building projects?
Yes - certified products can support green building goals and procurement requirements that favour verified eco-friendly materials.
