Product Certification

What is Product Certification?

Product certification is a process or method of certifying or qualifying a certain product that has passed the performance test and quality assurance test, and meets the criteria mentioned in regulations or specifications typically known as certification schemes.

In addition to meeting ISO certification requirements, manufacturers may also choose to have their products tested for conformity with the technical requirements of voluntary standards. By submitting their products to additional voluntary testing and certification, organizations can differentiate their products from those of competitors and further demonstrate their commitment to providing buyers and customers with quality products that are safe to use. Product certification offers customers a high degree of confidence that the product will perform according to the specified standard.

Product certification vs system certification

It helps to distinguish two different things IAS offers:

  • System certification (for example ISO 9001) assesses your organization’s management system — its processes and controls.
  • Product certification assesses a specific product against a defined scheme or standard, confirming that the product itself meets the required performance, safety, or compliance criteria.

Product certification is what allows you to place a recognized mark on a product and market it as compliant with a particular scheme.

Product certification process

  1. Apply, specifying the product and the certification scheme you need.
  2. IAS reviews the application and provides a quotation and certification plan.
  3. The product is tested and assessed against the scheme’s requirements, under IAS supervision or at a recognised laboratory.
  4. Any deviations (non-conformities) are listed, and the certification body sets the time required to close them, including corrections and corrective actions.
  5. After effective closure of the non-conformities, the certificate is issued for the scope that was assessed.

Product Certification Schemes

As an experienced product certification body serving clients in the USA and worldwide, IAS issues certification across a range of international product certification schemes, including:

Product certification for US businesses

The United States does not have a single, universal product-certification mark. Instead, the certification you need depends on your product and where you sell it — for example FDA requirements for regulated goods, scheme marks for food safety, or marks required by overseas markets such as CE for Europe or GOST-R/EAC for the Eurasian region. IAS helps US manufacturers, exporters, and importers identify the right scheme and achieve certification so their products are accepted in their target markets.
